Suffragette movie costumes on display...

With Hillary Clinton running to be the first female U.S. President and candidates like Donald Trump frequently making despicable comments about women (and frankly everything else), there's never been a better time to acknowledge the courage that the Suffragettes showed and the importance of securing equal voting rights for women in Britain in the early 20th century. Now more than ever, every vote counts if you want your say.

This trio of costumes from the historical movie were deigned by Jane Petrie and were photographed on display at the FIDM Museum in Downtown L.A. on February 12, 2016.

Fortunately I'd already glimpsed two of these Suffragette film costumes exhibited behind reflective display cases at the ArcLight Hollywood cinema last October, but it was nice to see them so brilliantly displayed out in the open with an extra costume worn by Meryl Streep in the movie.

This collection of costumes wonderfully shows the diversity of the women who fought for the right to vote, they came from all walks of life, from factory worker to high society, old and young, mothers, daughters and sisters.

In the movie Carey Mulligan plays a 24-year-old laundry worker who becomes caught up in the Suffragette movement.

If you're a fan of period dramas, be sure to also check out Carey Mulligan's Far From the Madding Crowd movie costume.

In the movie the pivotal role of leader of the British Suffragette movement, 'Emmeline Pankhurst', is played by Meryl Streep.

Not stranger to playing iconic figures, if you're a fan of the talented actress be sure to also check out these Margaret Thatcher costumes from The Iron Lady, this Julia Child movie costume from Julie & Julia and these Witch costumes from Disney's Into the Woods.

Costume worn by Helena Bonham Carter

If you like Helena Bonham Carter's 'Votes for Women' Suffragette outfit, be sure to also check out the equally iconic Mrs. Winifred Banks costume from Mary Poppins on display.

Stay tuned in the coming days for even more fantastic examples of film wardrobe on display at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Museum annual motion picture costume design exhibition (which runs until the end of April 2016 and is free to the public).
